A Downtown Greenville Wedding

Details, Local Art, and Special Touches

It was under the golden light of a June morning in downtown Greenville South Carolina that Sophie and Brandon’s wedding day quietly unfolded into something unforgettable. Nestled in the city’s heart, Zen offered a blend of architectural intrigue and botanical serenity - perfectly mirroring the couple's aesthetic: refined, whimsical, deeply sentimental.

I arrived at Zen early, to begin one of my favorite parts of the day - detail shots. I always build in a peaceful, full hour for detail shots to really let the creativity flow. During this time, I truly get to take in the venue and decide how I want to use it to let the story of the day begin breathing before the first scene unfolds. I carefully selected elements of the venue that would highlight the meaning behind Sophie’s heirloom pieces—from the dappled morning light spilling into the Zen garden where her ceremony would be held, to suspending her pearl-embellished shoes from a railing above the sea of glowing lanterns in the reception space. Her gown, a statement of elegance with pearl embroidery, was hung from the venue’s grand staircase. And then there was one unexpected backdrop: a watercolor painting of the waterfall where Brandon proposed, adding an intimate, serendipitous layer to the story.

The Ceremony

The night before, I had wandered into an art shop in downtown Greenville and discovered a watercolor painting by local artist Shradha Gupta. It depicted the very waterfall where Brandon had proposed beside the Grand Bohemian Hotel. Without hesitation, I purchased it, unsure of how or if it would be used (I figured at the very least, it would be a sentimental gift for Sophie!). But that morning, as Sophie handed me her heirloom jewelry, I knew. The painting would play a role as the backdrop to her details - a symbolic bridge between their engagement and the day they’d say “I do.” When I gifted it to Sophie, she smiled and said, “We’re actually staying at the Grand Bohemian tonight.” It was kismet. As a South Carolina and destination wedding photographer, I am always looking for ways to tie in the unique locations and venues that couples choose - and this was the perfect opportunity.

I took a short stroll with the groomsmen through the city for portraits—first stopping by the famous baseball stadium at Fluor Field, and then making our way to a refurbished cigar factory turned brewery. These backdrops—industrial yet storied—felt like the perfect contrast to the lush romanticism awaiting us back at Zen.

The ceremony was held in Zen’s garden, framed by cascading whimsical greens and crisp white flowers hand arranged by Brandon’s mother—a tender act of love in itself. Guests trickled in under the shade of willow trees while soft music played and I captured moments of arrival, laughter, and reverent stillness.

After vows were exchanged and Sophie and Brandon recessed to “Nothing Even Matters,” guests gathered in the Lotus Lounge for cocktails, where the space transformed into a modern gallery-like haven. The couple’s reception was an elegant transition into celebration. Beneath an umbrella of glowing paper lanterns, their first dance to H.E.R.'s “Best Part” felt like a scene from a dream. Toasts were followed by cake (soundtracked to Ty Dolla Sign's cheeky “Wedding Cake”), a bustling dirty soda bar, and a dance floor that never stood still.
The night concluded just as magically as it began—with a bubble send-off in the garden. The air shimmered with laughter, light, and the kind of joy that stays with you long after the last song plays.

Sophie and Brandon’s wedding was more than a beautifully curated event. It was a series of intimate, cinematic moments stitched together by love, family, and the subtle art of meaningful storytelling. And I feel deeply honored to have been the one to capture it all.

Sophie’s wedding look was ethereal, dripping with pearls from head to toe. Her pearl-bow shoes echoed the moonstone theme woven throughout the day and complimented her classic gown also embroidered with pearls. Sophie wore “Stella” by Tocca which was held in a fluted glass bottle inspired by the beauty of antique crystal decanters and left notes of blood orange, white freesia, spicy lily, and sandalwood in her wake as she walked down the aisle.

As the bridal party slipped into satin, olive-colored gowns and final curls were set into place, the atmosphere shifted. There was an audible hush as Sophie stepped into her gown, and then an eruption of emotion as her bridesmaids turned to see her for the first time. But it was her mother and father’s quiet prayer during their first look that truly stilled the room.
